Robin Hood and the Beggar. Beggars frequently appear in the stories of Robin Hood and very often turn out to be tougher than they look. In the most famous tale, Robin Hood beats a beggar in a fight, then borrows his clothes so he can try out the lifestyle. Artwork by Peter Dennis.

‘This must be the toughest pinder in England,’ he exclaimed. He then offered the official a place amongst the Merry Men.

The pinder readily accepted the offer. ‘I have no love nor loyalty for my current master,’ he told Robin, ‘but I must stay until after Michaelmas, when I will receive my pay.’ Robin was agreeable to the pinder’s compromise. The men shared some bread and ale at the gatehouse, and then Robin and his companions said their goodbyes to the pinder, until they would meet again in the forest.
